Bose Institute is the second oldest scientific research Institute in India founded by Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose in the year 1917. Sir J. C. Bose was a pioneer in the field of radio and millimeter waves and was the discoverer of wireless transmission of millimeter waves. He was the first to use a semiconductor in the detection of radio waves. Sir J. C. Bose's expertise spanned over a wide range of subjects from physics to biological sciences. Since then the institute has strived and evolved into a multidisciplinary research institute stressing on the fundamental problems of both basic and applied sciences. He was named as one of the fathers of radio science by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA.

Bose Institute is celebrating its centenary year through various year-long programmes covering all the disciplines the institute is engaged in. As a part of this centenary celebration and to commemorate its 100th birth anniversary, we are organizing a National Conference on Recent Trends in Condensed Matter Physics from 31st October to 3rd November 2017. Condensed matter physics is the branch of science that deals with the fundamentals of solids and liquids. It is considered as one of the largest and most versatile sub-fields of study in physics, due to the diversity of topics and phenomena which impact our daily lives by providing foundations for development of technology. The study of condensed matter physics involves measuring various material properties via experimental probes along with using techniques of theoretical physics to develop mathematical models that help in understanding physical behaviours. This field overlaps with chemistry, materials science and nanotechnology, and relates closely to atomic physics and biophysics. Research in condensed matter physics has given rise to several device applications, such as the development of the semiconductor-transistor, and laser technology. Several phenomena studied in the field of nanotechnology come under condensed matter physics.
The conference aims at broadly addressing the following topics:

1. Solid State Physics (Physical and Transport properties of rigid materials)
2. Computational materials science (density functional theory) and modelling of new materials.
3. Nano-materials and thin films.
4. Soft-condensed matter physics (physical properties of polymers, composites, liquid crystals, etc.)
