Research:

The superheated emulsion detector is an ubiquitous detector for detection of neutrons (in a mixed neutron+gamma field) and can also be used to detect gamma rays, energetic ions and electrons. It is also used for dark matter detection by international collaborations like PICASSO and SIMPLE, and is also used in medical sciences to detect photo-neutrons created during irradiation of patients. Here micron-size droplets of superheated droplets are held in a viscoelastic gel matrix (superheated drop detector SDD) or in an elastic gel matrix (bubble detector BD) and the droplet could either evaporate to a vapor bubble spontaneously or being induced by energetic radiation, thereby making it as a particle detector.

We studied the lifetime of droplets to gauge their nucleation efficiency and have shown that the droplets in SDD are in more than one metastable states. The nucleation threshold and nucleation efficiencies of SDD to gamma and neutrons at various pressures are studied.

We are also working on an optical system to detect nucleation and the acoustic emissions (shock wave and ringing sound) during liquid-vapor transition.
